Self Assessment

Throughout the semester, I have seen improvements in my writing and the way I analyze and read texts. Starting with the first worksheet we did on the first day of class, the excerpt of Frederick Douglass’ narrative, we were asked to speak about our ideas from the excerpt and the things that stood out the most in this worksheet. To answer the prompts, I mainly spoke of the story and the characters portrayed. I wasn’t sure of what to write so I went with things that involved the story and the characters. Weeks later, we were given three videos to watch and we were asked to take notes on them. After watching them I was able to go a bit more in-depth on how the speakers presented their ideas and how it made their writings interesting and the ways they used tones to express their ideas rather than simply talking about the plot of the videos. From this, I believe the second learning objective would be the one most present here because I was able to explore and analyze a bit more in-depth these different sources that all spoke of their own experiences.

I also saw this at the beginning of our peer profile assignment. When we had recently started to work with our partners, we had to read through their Literacy Narrative and write the top 10 words, 5 sentences, and 3 sources, and later on answer the question “What makes us interesting?”. Writing the notes about the narrative helped me think more in-depth what it is that makes me interesting. This relates to the first objective because I was able to see how certain standards make us gain or lose power as language users. When answering the question I wrote how many people will relate a lot to bilingual people more and how certain events or experiences will make some feel represented, giving them certain power.

The fifth objective, “Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences.” was shown through the notes i took from my peers ‘ spoken narratives. Before i presented, some peers went first and i was able to understand the types of media i should use. Since everyone’s presentations were different, everyone had different types of sources they used to explain their narratives. One peer used artwork to emphasize her emotions explained in her narrative. Another used images from a movie he watched that helped him evolve as a writer. With this, I was able to prepare the images I was gonna use and they helped me support my statements in my narrative.
